Sumerian “Cosmological (Creation) Narrative” and Ancient Alien Creation Theory         The sumerian civilization was a polytheism civilization believed to date back to around 3500 BC. According to their creation belief it was Nammu, the sea, "the mother, who gave birth to heaven and earth" who became "An" the male sky god and "Ki" the female earth who were separated by Enlil, their son who wanted to take his father’s place and power. Additional texts account that the moon was created when Ninli who was a young goddess ("lady wind" or "lady air") is warned by her mother Ninshebargunu that if she baths in a canal called Nunbirdu she will be seen by Enlil and he will want to make love to her. Ninli doesn’t listen to her mother and goes to the canal anyways where Enlil sees her and requests a kiss. When she refuses because he’s too young he gets a boat and goes to her and rapes her, she becomes pregnant with the moon god Nanna (or Sin). The other gods become furious of what Enlil has done so the vanish him in the direction of the underworld. Ninli follows Enlil but since Enlil doesn’t want his son the moon to be born in the underworld he impersonates a gatekeeper and asks Ninli to have sex with him, she agrees because she too doesn’t want Nanna to be born in the underworld so she gets pregnant with three deities who will take Nanna’s place in the underworld allowing Nanna to rise to the heavens.  (Kramer, Sumerian Mythology 39 - 40). The creation of man comes from the another Sumerian poem translated by Thorkild Jacobsen who was professor of Assyriology emeritus at Harvard University. The gods were dredging the rivers,   were piling up their silt   on projecting bends-- and the gods lugging the clay   began complaining  (Jacobsen, Harps 154)   Anu who was the god of all gods agreed that the labour of the gods was too great so his son Enki proposed to created man to do all of the physical labour that the gods were tired of doing. His half sister Ninki helped Enki by putting a god to death and using his body and blood mixed with clay to form the first human that had likeness to the gods. At first the man could not reproduce without the help from the gods but then Enki and Ninki created Adapa the first fully functioning human without the approval from Enki’s brother Enlil so Enlil became the adversary of man because this action created conflict among the gods. “Sumerian tablet mentions that men served gods and went through much hardship and suffering.” (Black, The origins of human beings according to ancient Sumerian texts). Some people today are convinced that the Sumerian texts are proof that the belief of the “ancient astronaut theory” is true. This theory has spread largely due to The History Channel's’ tv series “Ancient Aliens,” produced by Kevin Burns. Television personalities in the show such as Giorgio A. Tsoukalos are proponents of the idea that ancient alien astronauts interacted with ancient humans to help develop our human civilizations. Proponents such as Tsoukalos further propose that humans were created by these extraterrestrials to serve them. (Kevin, Ancient Aliens). Tsoukalos uses texts such as the sumerian writing as proof for his argument that the ancient people wrote of their accounts of what they witnessed and went through. The idea of intelligent creation from visitors that came to Earth in the distant past is further supported by texts such as the Bible in the eyes of leaders in the “ancient astronaut theory” movement such as Tsoukalos. Genesis in the Bible is used to support claims that the god in Genesis is not heavenly God but an alien who created Adam and Eve to populate the earth with servants for this alien visitor and the “angels” who Tsoukalos claims were no more heavenly than the creator but merely other aliens.  (Kevin, Ancient Aliens). Throughout history and till today there are many unanswered questions related to human life and existence that can’t be answered with 100% certainty and proof by either religion nor by science. These unanswered questions leave the curious human mind wandering and urging for answers thus creating theory. Some however turn this theory into a belief system and a decision to create rules for others emerge by some with the promise that these rules will ease the unpleasantness of the unknown and guide one to salvation. Salvation however, is relative to the society it emerges from. For example, during the founding of America salvation was the ultimate goal for Puritans, Catholics, and most religions groups in the mainland that resulted in the discriminated and even the murder of others that had different views. This all came in the name of salvation because one group of  people believed that their “rules” were the righteous way to live in the eyes of God to earn salvation. Today many see salvation in the idea that there is no intelligent design and that humans simply cease to exist once we die, this becomes a form of salvation because it allows for the belief that our actions don’t have consequences in the afterlife since the afterlife doesn’t exist but only consequences in this life. Weather the Sumerians were right or the Catholics or Puritans or ancient astronaut believers is not certain by any means but what is certain is that the human mind thirsts for answers resulting in a huge variety of belief systems around the world.               Works Cited Jacobsen, T. • Sumerian “Cosmological (Creation) Narrative” and Ancient Alien Creation Theory         The sumerian civilization was a polytheism civilization believed to date back to around 3500 BC. Catholics in American colonies   When the thirteen English colonies were first established between 1607 and 1732, Catholics were a religious minority in these colonies. All of the colonies with the exception of Maryland had laws against Catholic education. Due to the mistreatment by the Roman Catholic church in Europe towards other religious groups the colonists in the “New World” were conditioned to fear and and despise the Catholic Church largely due by the Elizabethan propaganda and England’s struggle against the Catholic powers of Europe. (Bunsen, 2009). George Calvert, First Lord Baltimore is credited for establishing the first Catholic colony in Newfoundland in 1634. He converted to Catholicism in 1624 which resulted in negative consequences for him costing him his State’s seat and parliament and even after the fact he did not renounce his faith but resigned willingly. (Bunsen, 2009). Maryland passed the “Acts Concerning Religion," on April 21, 1649, which prohibited the harassing or mistreating of people due to their religious beliefs and it guaranteed freedom to worship. Pennsylvania also tolerated Catholics under the leadership of the Quaker William Penn. (Fox, 2000). There was an influx of German immigrants to Maryland and Pennsylvania that also brought with them Catholicism and so they began to built churches in these colonies. Many of the Spanish and French immigrants also brought the Catholic faith with them. The Catholic counter to the Protestant reformation included the Council of Trent between 1545-63 which main goal was “....to enforce discipline and end the abuses and excesses that had weakened the Catholic Church to cause the Reformation.” (Kile, 2015). It also sent out Catholic missionaries to replace the lost members to the Protestant reformation by sending them to Japan, China, Central and South America to convert the people of those regions to Catholicism. Then when the Spanish sent out missionaries to what is now Central, South America, and Mexico they spread Catholicism and migrated north spreading their faith. The French also had a large following of Catholics so when they came to what is now Canada and some began to migrate to the northern English colonies they also brought Catholicism with them. The Catholic religion spread through the colonization of what is now Canada by the French and moved to the south down to the northern colonies and also through the colonization of South and Central America by the Spanish then move north to the mainland of America through what is now Mexico. The irony is that the Catholic church persecuted all religions that weren't Catholic for centuries in Europe but in the English Colonies it was Catholicism that was being prosecuted and vanished. As time progressed and with the passing of the “Acts Concerning Religion," by Maryland this helped ease religious tensions in America and lead the way for what would become the basis for freedom of religion in America. Hinduism in America                 The world parliament of religions was held on the shore of Lake Michigan, Chicago in 1893 and this was the first time that America had leaders from the western religions and the eastern religions all in one place including leaders from Hinduism. “Sisters and brothers of America” were the words spoken by a Hindu monk named Swami Vivekananda as he greeted the the 5,000 assembled delegates making him one of the most popular speakers. The speech that he gave that day introduced Hinduism to a crowd of Americans for the first time making the speech so memorable that it became part of India’s school curriculum to present day having school children memorize the speech given by Vivekananda. (Parliament of the World’s Religions, Chicago 1893).               Hinduism also known as Sanātana Dharma “the eternal law” is the world's 3rd largest religion with 750 million members. This religion is the world’s oldest major religion that dates back 4,000 years that originated near the river of Indus in Northern India and emerged out of Brahminism. The religion uses the sacred book called Vedas which is composed of the oldest religious texts in Hinduism. The religion has many holy places but one of the most well known is River Ganges and the religion’s most important festival is called Divali (Diwali) which celebrates the new year. This festival falls on different days each year because it is calculated by the lunar calendar not the western calendar. The main distinction between Hinduism and western religions is that unlike most forms of Christianity Hinduism has “....no founder, single teacher nor any prophets. Hinduism is not a Single Religion. Hinduism is the practices of a variety of different religious groups which come out of India.” (Barrow, Hinduism).               Hindus believe in one God called Brahman that can take on many different forms and is worshipped as different gods or goddesses. Hindus also believe that Atman is a part of Brahman that lives inside of everyone and that the eternal soul is real and that it goes through reincarnation. The reincarnation does not necessarily mean being born into a new human body, the belief in Hinduism is that the eternal soul goes through cycles in order to experience life in different forms so the reincarnation can happen in an animal, plant, or human body. These cycles of death and rebirth are called Samsara and the belief is that the cycle is dictated or governed by Karma. Karma is the belief that the actions taken in this life will affect the form and hardships endured in the next reincarnation and that any misfortune or hardships being endured in this incarnation are due to wrongful acts committed by a person in a past life. Moska is the ultimate freedom and goal in Hinduism and it is reached when a person becomes one with Brahma. After Moska is obtained and a person has become one with Brahma the cycles of reincarnation will cease because there is no longer a need for the soul to reincarnate since the soul has learned all that it can learn from experiencing life in different forms. At this point the person has also come to realized the truth that “...Brahman exists, nothing else.” (Barrow, Hinduism).   The four paths that Hinduism follow in order to achieve Moksha are: the path of Knowledge, the path of meditation, the path of devotion, and the path of good works. The Hindu place of worship is mainly in a person’s home in front of a shrine or alter containing pictures or statues that also contain at least one sacred statue or picture of one of the deity forms of Brahman referred to as murti. In front of these shrines or altars a family will worship and make offerings to murti. A public place where Hindus worship is a Hindu Temple called a Mandir that can contain different gods or goddesses depending on the temple, people will bring offerings to these deities and chant the deities’ name during worship. The three main practices of Hindus are worship called Puja, cremation no burial at death, and to comply with the rules of the caste system where all are equal no matter what occupation or title a person holds. Hindus as do other world religions also consider pilgrimages very important to the religion and their traditions, these pilgrimages typically happen at different sacred sites in India. (Barrow, Hinduism).   A lecture given by Associate Professor Jeannette M. Ludwig in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Buffalo discusses how eastern religions have been influenced and changed as they have migrated to America. Ludwig claims that “...religious practices are difficult to maintain in the U.S. The culture itself doesn't support the maintenance of the traditions..." (Fryling, "New" religions face challenges, misconceptions in U.S.). Ludwig states that an example of how American culture has changed Hinduism is that traditionally people in the Hindu faith have seen marriage as a contract between two families but Americanized people in this religion are falling in love and asking for the parent’s permission to marry as is custom in traditional America. She also points out that the marketing of this religion and other eastern religions have reduced the seriousness of these religions. Ludwig uses the word Karma, which is both used in Hinduism and Buddhism, as an example to claim that when American media and marketing attempt to profit by selling merchandise and overuse phrases such as Karma that it “diminishes and dilutes” the value of the religion. Her views on why American culture changes traditional religions in America she says is because "Americans seem to see religion as some sort of label we can slap on and take off."
